Earthquake Calendar: Day Four

Friday 1/15
Walk with Tony and Nichole to Van Dam’s and skype Mamma & Daddy- my first direct communication with people stateside. Leave off on my own for O; make Pancakes at O for kids’ dinner. Choppers flying constantly. Make it down to QCS to join Tony and Nichole on walk to Quesqueya Chapel- must ask Pastor Bobby if we can relocate kids to Chapel. Steve picks us up on our walk and drops us off on the corner- he’s taking the four American refugees to the airport. Meet Nichole’s friend on the road; brief conversation. Young Haitian man who speaks English, in shock, walks up to us: “They’re gone. They’re all gone. My family is dead,” showing a photo of him, his wife, and 3-4 young children. He walks away, in a daze. -How do you respond to that? No time at Chapel to talk in depth to Pastor Bobby- Tony graciously does so while I high-tail it back to QCS. I am anticipating that our relief team will be arriving that evening and need more bedding materials for them- 6 adults. Conscript Katie and Jaime to help and we high-tail it to the O. We make it back to QCS right at dusk. Meanwhile, Francois is unsuccessful in picking up Relief Team from Airport. In light of the team’s absence tonight, I am struck by God’s gracious hand in the small details of life: tonight we have more staff on hand, so the additional bedding is extremely useful!

  1. abbey, thank you so much for sharing these day by day accounts after the quake. I wish i had written things down more as they happened (i was going to use the word "journaled" but apparently that's not a word!). but i love reading from other people who have written their stories so detailed. because these are stories i never want to forget.
